High blood pressure is also known as hypertension, and is where the pressure of the blood flowing through the arteries is higher than it should be. There are two kinds of hypertension, as it can be either primary or secondary. Most cases are classified as primary, which is where there is no cause for there being hypertension. Secondary cases are where hypertension is caused by other problems that can also affect the other major organs in the body.

Two different kinds of pressure readings are taken in order to measure blood pressure. These are systolic pressure, or the pressure that is in the blood vessels when a normal heartbeat is taking place, and diastolic pressure, or the pressure between heartbeats. There are charts which show the normal ranges for these pressures in a healthy person. A slightly higher reading can show pre-hypertension, whereas a high reading will mean that the person is hypertensive.
Some people who have a high reading may have so as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle, and changing it to a healthier one could be enough to bring levels down into a normal range. Others may need medication in addition to making lifestyle changes as these on their own would be insufficient to bring levels down within a normal range quickly enough.
Perhaps the first thing that a person should address is the amount of salt in their diet, as today’s food are often very high in sodium. There are salt substitutes available for those that cannot give it up completely. Increasing potassium intake can help to reduce the effects of sodium. Eating a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables and low in dairy and fat has also found to be helpful in decreasing blood pressure.
Increased exercise levels help as the blood flow will be increased as well, and it will also help with weight loss or control. If this exercise is cardiovascular then it will help too strengthen the heart and to keep the resting pulse rate lower.
Stopping smoking and drinking will help, as smoking is known to increase blood pressure and cause strokes and heart attacks over time. Alcohol also increased blood pressure immediately after being ingested.
Stress is a well documented contributor to high blood pressure levels and so should be kept to a minimum. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation could help.
Treating high blood pressure can be an expensive business if it is not caught early before the damage is done, so many governments are trying to make their populations aware of this fact as a lot of people do not know that they have this condition. They are trying to educate people to take better care of their health so that their life is prolonged.
